The excitement of longer days and lots of warm temperatures is finally upon us, and it's the perfect time for the whole family to get outside and get active. Enjoy the sunshine while gardening, walking the dog, or taking a bike ride with friends and family!

However, with higher temperatures comes a higher challenge to be active outdoors. With the sun beaming down all day, it's much easier to become overheated. Warmer months also bring humidity that can interfere with your body's natural way of releasing heat: sweat.

Be Smart when Working Out:

1. Timing - Do your best to avoid working out in early afternoon as it's usually hottest between noon and 3 pm. Aim for exercising in the morning or evening.

2. Hydration - Be sure to drink water before, during, and after physical activity, even if you don't feel thirsty.

3. Dress for Success - Wear light colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes. Moisture-wicking fabrid can also be a great choice.

4. Sun Protection - Protect yourself from the sun with sunglasses, a hat or visor, and plenty of sweat-resistant sunscreen. Reapply after two hours!

5. Listen to Your Body - Allow yourself time to adapt to the heat, take frequent breaks in the shade, and be sure to drink water BEFORE you get thirsty. Be gentle: you might not be able to work out as long or as hard as usual when it's very hot.

6. Buddy Up - If you can, work out with a partner for social interaction, safety, and fun!
